World Street Photography 5
Lunch in the shadow of an old tank, a dressed up drag queen in the daily routine of a city, a group of children that pose in front of a car for the camera - Street Photography lives through its momentariness, through surreal and funny, irritating or fascinating, beautiful, grotesque, minimalistic, overcrowded and opposite scenarios. It celebrates the art to be at the right place at the right time to catch this short moment, that will not return like this for a second time. Sometimes secretly taken, sometimes in direct interaction, photographs arise, that show the apparent trivial in its particularity.
19 international curators choose for World Street Photography 5 out of 20.777 photographs from photographers from 77 countries the 212 finest pictures. The spectrum of the 35, in this year's World Street Photography 5 book shown nations, reaches from Australia to Vietnam.
Street Photography has a long history. At first because of the cumbersome technique only reserved for a few, today it is absolutely democratic. Whether using a mobile phone or a professional lens - moments of the public life are more than ever the subject of photography. Besides of their artistic aspect, the pictures have the immense potential to become historical evidence of our age. "Imagine what it would be like to have photographs of King Tut or from the streets during the French Revolution? And, a picture of Jesus Christ would surely be worth the metaphorical thousand words, wouldn't it?" (Michael Ernest Sweet, Quote of the intro of yearbook "World Street Photography 5").
In the context of the opening of the exhibition, we present the book "World Street Photography 5", published by GUDBERG NERGER in cooperation with the international photo-community world-street.photography.
Part of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Ashalayam - House of Hope charity organization. Ashalayam provides education, safety, protection, and shelter to the street children of Kolkata, India.
The Art of Street Photography, the technique of photographing human exchanges in a public place, is a term that means different things to different photographers. From those who prefer the surreptitious capture of their subjects to those who interact directly with the strangers they are photographing, street photography as an art is varied and conflicted in its approach to the world. The photographs in this great yearbook inspire within your own stories – the visible and the invisible.
